Who We Are:
Authors is an interdisciplinary creative studio based in the Bay Area and Louisville, KY. What began as a production house has since scaled to include more typical agency-style design and digital services. We very humbly describe ourselves as the future of work, as we apply startup methodology to the advertising field to handle large scale jobs without the physical infrastructure typical of an agency. Our company structure would not have been possible even ten years ago, and we are constantly striving to refine it.
Our work is typical for an ad agency on a smaller scale, and includes live action production, post services, digital, display, interactive and new media. In our work we like to find ourselves at the intersection of storytelling and technology - VR, creative coding, and AI is often found in our projects.
We are looking for a client-facing Project Manager who can actively manage the growing workload of the company. This position will place you in charge of freelancers, in direct contact with clients, and will report to the Executive Producer and Creative Director.
This is a full time remote position. Bay Area applicants will have the opportunity to use the Authors offices in West Oakland, but it is not required. We’re more concerned about the work you do than where you do it. For applicants east of PST, you will need to keep typical PST office hours, as many of our clients are on the West Coast. You will need the fastest Internet available to you, and applicants with superlative Internet expertise who are ready to hit the ground running will be preferred!
What You’ll Do:
-You will be managing a roster of freelancers and vendors, creating and adhering to budgets and schedules, and will be a client-facing contact. Our resources are worldwide, and must be managed to take advantage of relative schedules.
-Develop project scope and objectives, involving the relevant stakeholders.
-Create and manage the relevant project according to in-place processes.
-Offer suggestions to improve our process.
-Manage detailed project plans and timelines and internal schedules.
-Be accessible during PST hours in an always-on-call retainer client relationship and become the face of Authors with that client.
-Promote risk management and general organisational awesomeness.
-Assist in managing and contributing to Authors’ social PR efforts and open source offerings on the Web site.
-Find and hire new talent.
-Assist in new client outreach.
Who You Are:
You’re a self-starting multitasker. You can write an email about one subject while having a discussion on the phone about another. You have no problem getting in the face of your boss because you think they’re making a mistake. You believe in your heart that 9-to-5 office life is a fast way to kill the human spirit, is antiquated beyond belief and is not the best way to get things done. You believe in the open source mentality, have heard of B-Corporation status, and are not in the business of taking advantage of freelancers because it’s the corporate culture status quo. You are extremely comfortable with online services and tools. You hop right into programs and use them to work for you. You are not afraid of learning about tech, and getting proficient in the lingo of a production or post process that you may not be familiar with. We are a flexible and fluid business and want our employees to have a part in moulding who we are. We are also a young business, and you will thrive if you are comfortable handling ambiguity in the workplace, seeking out responses and clarification, and helping shape internal change where you see fit.
You Are Not:
Afraid of picking up the phone. Afraid of technology. Dependent on others to tell you what to do to get something done. Needing hand holding to thrive in a work environment. Ever thinking the words, “that’s not my responsibility.”
Education and Training:
BA/BS or complementary job experience.
Minimum 4 years experience in a management field, whether it was a ramen chain or BBDO. We’re looking for management competence not job specificity. Experience in a production house, post house, or freelance experience in the advertising fields as well as startup experience preferred. Live action production experience is a bonus, and experience of complex organisational structures on large budget jobs preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Superlative interpersonal skills among all walks of life and all sizes of egos. Ability to work enthusiastically with CMO’s, VP’s, agency producers, freelancers, and external vendors. Arm wrestling creatives into using things like Gantt charts or custom job trackers that you lovingly created from scratch. Excellent written and communication skills. Experience with a whole host of project management tools that may include Asana, Harvest, Slack, Dropbox, Google Docs and/or Quip, Agile and Scrum workflows. Proven time-management skills. Willingness to learn new programs, and incredible speed and efficiency while doing so. Proven personal time management skills, and a track record in getting things done remotely.
We do not require upfront proficiency in the tools at use, but you must be willing to learn about and understand how they are used-

Typical 40 hour work weeks with atypical working hours. The schedules you keep will be largely up to you, although you will need to be accessible and able to meet virtually and progress work 9-5 PST.
Occasional travel, whether to a live action shoot, a stand up meeting with a client, or an Authors meetup. Assume 3-6 trips per year.

Home Office Requirements:
-Screaming fast Internet, with fiber availability preferred. We will cover these costs. If you do not have access to fast internet this position is not for you.
-Considerable disk space, whether that means an upgraded internal laptop drive or a RAID array which would also be provided.
